Keto / low carb aesthetic bodybuilding discussion (CAN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH PROTEIN?)

Keto / low carb aesthetic bodybuilding discussion (CAN YOU HAVE TOO MUCH PROTEIN?)Hey guys, know some people may think this discussion is better suited for somewhere like /r/keto, but I am hoping to have this discussion specifically in relation to what experiences you all have had with this diet style when bodybuilding, and what your thoughts on a recent video I have found and the statements made within are. About me, 23 years old, most of my life I've been skinny but in great shape, ran / swam etc... In uni, I finally wanted to bulk up, so started gymming, ate everything, bought food without any thoughts re: macros, it was all about calories per $ when looking for food. Finally in fourth year started crisping things up, diet was cleaner, started increasing protein intake hugely with protein shakes, etc... and gym 5+ times a week. Made huge progress and gained a lot of muscle, but also stayed quite lean. Now that I'm out of uni and back into the corporate world, can only gym for 30 minutes to an hour each day, but I still go 5 times a week after work. Had a bit of a dirty bulk until around January, where I gained a substantial amount of muscle, but also a bit of fat. Now here's where the diet discussion comes into play. January this year, started super clean diet, almost no carbs, high fat high protein (1g/pound of body weight a day). Been working amazingly for me as far as I can tell, as body fat % is plummeting, but seem to be still gaining muscle. Thought I was achieving a great "keto" diet. Through both trial and error over the years and substantial research to try and optimize my health and the speed at which I can gain muscle, I constantly look into diet and exercise discussions, especially in terms of medical / scientific research. Today, I found a video, and researcher, who go against everything I thought I understood about ideal diets. I've always been told by everyone in the fitness community / doctors I've consulted / other research I've seen / and experienced in my own personal training and diet experiments that there is no such thing as too much protein. Sure people always said that if you had more than you needed you were wasting money, but it was never an issue of negative health / diet consequences if you overdid it with protein. Now I find this guy, who claims 1g/kg lean body weight is the ideal amount of protein per day, and anything more is actually counterproductive, especially if cutting to low body fat for competitions / summer generally. Here's the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjPgK7gWJeM My discussion questions are as follows, answer as many as you feel like, and if I have any relevant experience, I'll add what I've found as well at times: 1) Based on all your knowledge and experiences, what would you all say the ideal amount of protein per day should be? 2) In terms of cutting to get down to competition / beach body levels of body fat, do any of you use ketosis / heavy carb restriction diets, and how effective have you found them? 3)What supplementation do you all use, especially when cutting. By "supplementation", I mean literally anything outside of regular meals. For example, I have two large protein shakes that give a total of 150g of protein per day, a scoop of my creatine powder, a multivitamin, and 2000mg omega-3 oil pills. (thoughts on omega-3 pills also? heard amazing things about them, ESPECIALLY for dropping body fat, in addition to a bunch of other claimed benefits) I made this account completely in the hope that we can get a worthwhile discussion going, as it amazes me how large this community is, and I'm amazed how much I learn from this community every week. tl;dr: Let's hear your opinions on ideal protein / carb levels, and supplementation submitted by /u/alex_the_pretty_good [link] [comments]
