When I first moved to DC, I was straight out of grad school where I didn't run and ate like crap and managed to get myself up to 235 pounds, and I was determined to end that.
I started watching my calorie intake, although not religiously, just making sure that I eat less than before, and started to run. Let me tell you, running when you are a big guy is hard! You can feel all the energy it takes just to move your body faster than it wants to go. I have been a runner for years until grad school and so now I was getting discouraged quickly. I ended up losing about 20 pounds through diet alone before actually getting serious in my running.
BEST ADVICE EVER: join a running group or find somebody who also runs and do it with them. I started out just running 3 miles at a time, usually back of the group, but about 4 months later I have lost another 20 pounds and am in front of the pack. I would say what got me there the most was to treat the runs seriously and run with somebody who is just a bit faster than you so that it forces you to push yourself.
It all culminated with the rock n roll half marathon this weekend. I was worried: I often start races too quick, would I hurt myself, I haven't trained more than 11 miles, so many things could go wrong. My goal was to hit under 2 hours, which is about a 9:10 mile pace, but I ENDED UP FINISHING in 1:46:50, WHICH IS 8:10 MILE PACE! This is including my miles 8,9 and 10 all being under 8 minutes. I don't know how it happened, but I'm so happy I can finally call myself a runner again.
