5'6" (168cm), 136lb (62kg) female - is 800cal/day okay as a temporary measure?

Hi /r/loseit,

I'm a 168cm (5'6"), 62kg (136 lb), extremely sedentary 25-year-old female.

A couple of years ago, I dropped from 75kg (about 165lb) to 64kg (about 140lb) on a 1200 cal/day diet. I plateaued for about six months at 64kg until I accepted that I would have to eat below the 'bare minimum' to lose any more weight, and switched from 1200 to 1000 a day. Over the next eightish months, I slowly dropped to 58kg (127lb).

My mistake then was switching to my recommended maintenance intake of 1400 calories a day. I put the weight back on over the following months, gradually reaching 65kg (143lb). I know I was eating 1400 calories a day - I was still calorie counting, ensuring I only ate food I could find out the calories for, and weighing the amounts.

About three weeks ago, I started an 800 calorie/day diet. I've since lost 2kg (4.5lbs). I eat one meal (generally 600 cals of meat and veggies) and one snack (generally 200 cals of fruit) a day. I don't get hungry until dinner time anyway, and in fact eating anything before about 4pm tends to make me feel ill, so it honestly doesn't bother me. Apart from tiring a little easier, I feel fine.

I'm eating 800 instead of 1000 a day because I have an important deadline in two months that I want to feel trim for, and my weight loss on 1000/day is so glacial that there'll barely be a difference by then. I feel 800 a day allows me a satisfactory weight loss rate. Upon reaching 58kg, I'll switch to 1000 a day to get me to 55kg (121lb), and then 1200 a day maintenance.

The reason I'm making this post is because I generally see severe reactions to sub-1200 calorie diets on reddit, so I'd like to seek your thoughts. I think part of this may be because the user base is largely male, and potentially not used to low numbers - I even see harsh reactions to 1200-1400 calorie diets. Another reason might be because people generally presume at least a moderate activity level. That being said, I assume frequenters of this sub are more versed in health and fitness than me.

What are your thoughts? Is 800/day okay as a temporary solution for someone of my stats in my situation, or is there something Big and Scary I'm overlooking?
